40 Steps And 19 Signatures!

March 14, 2010

Jeffrey Zients, Chief Performance Officer for the U.S. federal government recently pointed out that in order for a person to get hired by the Housing and Urban Development Department (HUD) they must complete a process that takes 139 days on average to complete, which involves 40 steps and 19 signatures.

Wow 40 steps and 19 signatures! Reforming government requires taking the time to take a close look at the process and procedures people must complete to get a permit, obtain funding, get hired etc.

Hiring reform is one of six strategies to improve performance Zients outlined. He also wants agencies to eliminate waste, refocus their energies on top priorities, overhaul acquisition, improve information technology systems, and increase government transparency.

All six of the above mentioned strategies are good places to focus attention on improving government performance.
